Microsoft 365 (fka Office 365)

Microsoft 365 includes:

  • The latest Office apps, like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • The ability to install on PCs, Macs, tablets, and phones.
  • OneDrive cloud storage (Note: U-M Google and Dropbox are recommended for storing U-M collaborative data.)

Office 365 productivity apps can be installed on personally-owned devices.

Michigan Medicine has their own HITS-managed Microsoft 365 instance separate from campus. Refer to the Terms & Conditions section at the end of this page for more information.

License Information

Terms & Conditions

U-M Microsoft Office 365 (managed by ITS) is available to active U-M faculty, staff, students, sponsored affiliates (Type-1 and Type-2), and emeritus with regular (not temporary) uniqnames. Alumni and retirees are not included in the university's licensing terms with Microsoft.

Eligible users can install the apps on their personally-owned devices. Sponsored affiliates and Michigan Medicine affiliates (using their @umich.edu emails) don’t have access to use the Office desktop applications. They will need to use the online web app versions instead. (Michigan Medicine affiliates can also choose to use the HITS-managed Microsoft 365 instance.)

Michigan Medicine

The Microsoft 365 service for Michigan Medicine is managed separately to meet the organization's regulatory, contractual, and security requirements. The ITS-managed Microsoft 365 service for academic campuses is not permitted for Michigan Medicine business, education, patient care, or research use.

Your Responsibilities

Individuals at U-M are ultimately responsible for any infringing software on their computers or devices or for violating the terms and conditions of software licenses. Individuals are responsible for reviewing the SPG on Software Procurement and Licensing Compliance.
